A Visit to Fuji Bakery/ by Robyn Wolfe, Marketing

If you haven’t been to Fuji Bakery in Bellevue yet, I highly suggest you add it to your short list because the pastries and breads are simply amazing and delicious!

Stepping into Fuji Bakery is just like stepping into Japan.  First you grab your shopping basket and tongs and then circle around the gorgeous display cases full of  handcrafted pastries that are so tempting a customer could never take just one.

By the end of my circling, my basket was filled with a meat pie, curry tuna sandwich with avocado, caramel sel (a beautifully browned tiny baguette levain with chocolate, caramel sauce and gray sea salt), blueberry brioche myrtille, apricot tart, organic strawberry shortcake, and a special French toast creation!  Every single one of them was delicious, and I can’t wait to check out their smaller bakery in the International District!  Yum!

Brave Horse Food Lifeline Fundraiser/ by Amy Richardson, Marketing

On Saturday July 30, Brave Horse Tavern put on a BBQ and Beer Garden in the outside courtyard to raise money for Food Lifeline.

In the perfect 76 degree weather we quenched our thirst with tasty suds from Ninkasi, Maritime, Schooner Exact, and Pike brews.

Chef Brian Walczyk (at the grill to the right; Chris Field is to the left) and his team worked the grill and served up Brave Horse burgers, bratwurst, and black bean burgers- all that and a tasty side of chips!

They also handed out a coupon for a free Brave Horse pretzel with a delish spread.

The courtyard was jammin’ with musicians who all lent their voices for Food Lifeline.  We had Mark Pickerel, The Gentlemen Buckhunters, Kato, Randy, Robbie and Tony from Side Saddle, Kim Virant, Chris Friel, Gary Westlake and Victoria Wimer Contreras on the “hot” stage-literally hot in the direct sun!!

We owe big thank yous to all who came out to volunteer and who attended.  In just 4 fun hours we raised enough to feed 390 hungry individuals for an entire month!!!

Thank you! from the Brave Horse Team!!

Amazonians take the Dahlia Workshop Challenge!!/by Shelley Lance, Blog Editor

A group of Amazon employees who are also frequent patrons of the  Dahlia Workshop Biscuit Bar approached Chef Tony Catini with an idea for their own self imposed Biscuit Challenge.  They proposed to eat three “The Zach” biscuit sandwiches in one day.  “The Zach” is composed of fried chicken, gravy, a fried egg, AND bacon all enclosed in a delicious Dahlia Workshop biscuit. It is thus the most high calorie sandwich on the biscuit menu, and eating three of these in one day would be quite a gustatory (or crazy?) feat.  Tony asked the Amazonians to call ahead so he could start prepping the sandwiches in order to have them ready for the onslaught.

In the morning, 17 Amazonians appeared in the Workshop to chomp down their Zach sandwiches.  Midday, 14 returned for a second awesomely delicious Zach.  At 5pm, only 7 hardy souls staggered in for that last Zach sandwich, dripping goodness, gravy, egg yolk and bacon fat.

As a prize, Tony offered the Amazon folk who completed the “Zach-Off”  the opportunity to design a sandwich that Tony would then place on the Dahlia Workshop menu as the Monday special.  This new item will be called The Amazonian.  Stay tuned.

The Walrus and the Carpenter/ by Shelley Lance, Blog Editor

Finally, finally made it to Renee Erickson’s new oyster bar, The Walrus and the Carpenter, last night with a few friends in tow. We walked into the renovated Kolstrand building on the warehouse-y side of Ballard Ave, and, while waiting in a bicycle shop cum coffee house with a cold glass of rosé in hand, I felt like I was no longer in sorta trendy Seattle but had somehow landed in uber-hip Portland!  At last the call came on our friend’s cell phone informing us that we were invited to our table in the already jamming (at 6pm) gorgeous little oyster bar.

Our well-informed waiter gave us the most detailed and charming oyster descriptions ever so naturally we ordered his top three favorites: Samish Sweets, Eld Inlet, and Effinghams, as well as a bottle of Sancerre.  The oysters arrived on ice, perfectly shucked and well chilled, with lemon wedges, mignonette, and grated fresh horseradish. They were sweet and delicious.  Of course we ordered a few plates of rustic bread and butter to go with them.  After finishing the raw oysters, we had to try the fried ones, which were crispy and cloud-light, served with a cilantro aioli.  “This is what they eat in heaven,” my friend, Bob, declared.  We also shared delightfully mild grilled sardines with a walnut shallot relish as well as a simple summer plate of sliced Billy’s tomatoes with olive oil and salt, plus a swiss chard salad with fried egg and, finally, a plate of gin-cured king salmon.  There wasn’t a clunker in the bunch.  Everything seemed exactly perfect and complete, adding up to a joyful summer supper for friends.  There was some talk of skipping dessert, but I don’t like to miss a chance to taste Renee’s sweets.  We ordered an apricot almond tart, very nice, and a transcendent bread pudding with espresso butter (I often don’t like bread pudding because it can be too heavy and too much, but this was amazingly delicate and refined.)  Maybe most of you have already been to Renee’s delightful new joint (her other restaurant is the fantastic Boat Street Cafe), but if not, it’s Tuesday so the wait time won’t be long, and they open at 4pm….
