The Suburbs Strike Back/ by Tom Cole, Etta’s
Those of us commuters exiled to the suburbs often take heat from our city folk friends about how we dwell in a culinary wasteland. And while dining density may be lagging, you cannot knock us about boring doughnuts. Not anymore.
Downtown Mill Creek’s FROST Doughnuts stands as a shiny haven of sophisticated sugar to shut up any urbanite. The cases are kaleidoscopic displays of classics like basic cake and pillowy French crullers to fancy-schmancy tongue-tinglers they call “Evolved:” dreamy Bourbon Pecan, spicy Aztec Chocolate, lush, white Wedding Cake (so pretty you’ll cry!) and Southern Red Velvet under sweet cream cheese icing. They’re all so round and smooth you just want to cuddle them.
Yes, city pals, FROST Doughnuts is worth the commute. Suddenly the North End got a little closer, huh?

I have to agree on Frost! I have all my friends at work, in the heart of Seattle’s Financial district, craving them, they even will drive up to “Canada” for them now.

Shhhhhh Tom…..if you keep hyping this place up, then I’ll never be able to get my hand son the smoky maple bacon bar! Let’s keep the cat IN the bag, ok?

I had my first Frost Doughnut at the Seattle Food and Wine Experience earlier this year, and the red velvet doughnut (with its sultry pillow of cream-cheese frosting) left such an impression on me that I woke the next morning determined to have another. Needless to say, I took the long way to work that morning!
It is important to note that the Frost flavor menu changes daily. True, many of the “evolved” doughnuts are available regularly, however many others (such as my favorite PB&J 2.0, a grape jelly-filled bismarck topped with peanut butter) are not (Monday only). Not important for a first time visit, but good to know when visions of banana-split fritters began dancing in your head!
