Laurelhurst Market/ by Eric Tanaka, Executive Chef

Laurelhurst Market is a great example of a comtemporary Portland restaurant.  It’s a hybrid- butcher shop and restaurant- which features locally sourced items.  Racing back to Seattle after hitting some wineries in Dundee, I’d hoped to get in as Laurelhurst opened. I got there right at 5 and was the first one on the waitlist.  It was packed!  Why? Good, authentic food, simply prepared in a nice bistro atmosphere.  The menu loosely follows along the path of a steakhouse and features the meats from the butcher case.  It would certainly be an updated modern steakhouse with lighter sides and more finished entrees versus an a la carte service.  The odd part of me eating here is that I’m eating vegetarian for January.  I did not stray, but I was so tempted, and still ended up eating like a king, just not the king of meats.

So, what did you eat if not meat, and why are you eating vegetarian for January?

Hey ET…I’ll have to check this place out when I go to Portland next. Have you eaten out at Select Gourmet? I took the kids there a couple weeks ago to pick up some more pork belly, house-made sausages (Berkshire pork and pistachio a great one!), and a couple Kobe strip steaks. My son was hungry, so we took a seat at one of their 3 tables by the cold case and ordered one of their specials of the day (It changes daily and is written on a small chalk board). We shared a plate of Kefka (Tunisian sliders) which were mini meatballs composed of beef, lamb, parsley, spices; those were tucked into two pitas with fresh pear-shaped cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and a nice sauce. It was served with a lightly dressed cous cous salad that had red bell pepper, capers, onion, dried fruit, and herbs. Delicious. The butcher there will also gladly grill you up anything from the cold case!

    Kefta, not Kefka…sorry!

Veggie for January is a New Years Slanted resolution y’all.

Chuck I haven’t eaten at this Select Gourmet. There was another iteration that I ate at which was delicious.
