Food in the News by Shelley Lance/Blog Editor

Sheila Lukins, co-author, with Julee Rosso, of the Silver Palate Cookbook, died on Sunday.  I have a new, 25th Anniversary edition of the Silver Palate in my office, but still own, at home, the well-thumbed, stained, dilapidated, and falling-apart book which I purchased in the early 80’s.  The Silver Palate was more than a cookbook to so many of us; it was part of our culinary education.  Sheila will be sorely missed. Here is the link to her obituary in the New York Times.

Well,it is sad. Sheila Lukins was my Julia. I didn’t connect with “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” The Silver Palate was more engaging and less Intimidating some how, it could have been the goofy graphics or easy banter of the recipes but I really loved it.

I loved it too. I haven’t used Silver Palate in a long time, but, years ago, I cooked my way through many of the recipes. Silver Palate was so fresh and exciting to me at that time.
