A Little Japanese Dinner Amongst Friends: by Katie O, Tom’s Assistant
If I’m being honest here (and for the record, I am), I would readily tell you that it is a rarity for me to sit down and cook for my friends, and even rarer still, in parties larger than… well… one. But it doesn’t mean that I don’t love to cook for the people I love when I do make time for it.
The other day I made some favorites from growing up as a kid in the Okumura Household. Here’s what I made. I think my mom would be proud:
Chilled soft tofu with grated ginger, green onion and soy sauce (pictured above).
Lotus root cooked in dashi, mirin with bonito flake on top (dish to the right of the yellow chop sticks).
Ochazuke- sticky Japanese rice with hot bitter green tea poured on top (not shown here). And crispy pork wontons with water chestnuts (pictured above).
