Earlier this week, the Chicago-based Healthy Schools Campaign brought culinary students from the Richards Career Academy in Chicago to cook the perfect, healthy school lunch with White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass, according to this article in the Washington Post. The menu: carrot quesadillas, chicken-stuffed peppers, and a “refrescante” (ie. salsa) salad. The meal will also be served to House members and staffers at the Longworth Cafeteria and to 40,000 students at schools across the country.
Though the approximate food cost of this meal is only $1.30 per person, the costs of producing and serving it brings the total up to $3.71 in Chicago. That’s a dollar more per person than the government pays for each student meal.
President Obama, in his budget, has called for $1 billion to improve child nutrition programs. So the kids from culinary school were in DC to help convince Congress to approve those funds.

Sandwiches are so simple, yet so hard to make. This Bahn mi shop in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn jammed 5 cooks and a cashier into a closet. Boneless pork chops, which is a pork loin, and tofu were ordered and eaten in ten minutes flat.

Stinky……a meat palace. That’s the signage that you walk into when you enter Stinky. What a great food shop, 5 different hams sliced to order, unique cheeses and provisions. There are so many food stores selling generic non-descript fancy foods, it’s nice to find one with a little bit of character serving food with a lot of character.

Though, sadly, Tom didn’t win Best Restaurateur at the James Beard Awards, he and Jackie enjoyed dining at Porchetta. Here’s the link to a fun video clip.

If you can make it to the Ballard Sunday Market, I recommend that you seek out Quilceda Farm, purveyors of Northwest Boer goats. Proprietor Terry Whetham sells these really terrific racks of goat rib that grill to mouth watering perfection. And as you can see in the photo, we enjoyed it with a Piemontese nebbiolo, which was almost as fun as being in Italy!
